Can a Hat Badge Fit in a Badge Wallet? Choosing the Right Badge Version

Can a hat badge go into a leather badge wallet? In some cases, yes. The important detail is whether the wallet is cut for that particular badge version and built around the attachment behind it.

A department name alone does not tell you which cutout to choose. The same agency can have an issued wallet badge, a Class A hat badge or other versions with different outlines. Our Badge Library lists supported shapes so you can begin with the badge you actually intend to carry.

Start with the badge, rather than the agency name

A badge can carry the same crest or wording as another version without sharing its exact perimeter. The crown, shoulders, points and lower banner all contribute to the shape that the leather panel needs to follow.

That is why the library includes separate entries where a different version needs its own outline. Look for labels such as Hat Badge, Old, New or a particular rank. These labels help distinguish the available files; they are not interchangeable descriptions of one universal shape.

If you are buying for someone else, establish which badge they want to use before selecting the cutout. A clear view of the actual badge is more useful than a stock photograph of a similar department emblem.

The RCMP example: two badge versions on one agency page

Our RCMP badge wallet page provides separate printable outlines for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police badge and the RCMP hat badge. That distinction matters even though both belong to the same agency.

Select the outline that corresponds to the badge going into the wallet. Choosing an RCMP design or a Mountie Edition exterior does not remove the need to identify the right badge version.

The exterior design and the badge cutout answer different questions. One concerns how the leather wallet looks; the other concerns the metal badge it needs to accommodate. You can enjoy the personal details while still making the fit decision from the actual badge.

The BC Ambulance example: a wallet built around a hat badge

Our BCEHS and BC Ambulance collection specifically describes a cutout for the BC Ambulance Service Class A hat badge. It is a useful example of a hat badge that has a supported wallet application.

It also shows why the phrase hat badge should not be treated as an automatic yes or no. The answer comes from the supported outline, the chosen model and the mounting arrangement. A different agency's hat badge needs its own review rather than borrowing that result.

Most BC Ambulance Class A hat badges use a screw-and-post attachment. Check the badge you own before selecting the option, particularly if it is an older version or has already been mounted to another backing.

The back of the badge matters too

An outline confirms the front shape, but it does not describe the depth of the hardware. A post, pin or clip can influence how far the badge sits forward and how the wallet closes.

Our Badge Attachments guide explains the available systems and the corresponding leather backers. Identify the hardware on your badge rather than choosing an attachment from the agency name alone.

If the hardware projects noticeably, ask us about the arrangement before attempting to change it. A fit consultation can address the outline and attachment together. You do not need to remove anything simply to identify which wallet you are considering.

Choose the wallet after confirming the badge version

Once you know the correct outline and attachment, choose a model for the way you carry cards, identification and cash. Check that model's listed badge-size limit as well as its layout.

A badge being supported does not mean every wallet model is suitable for it. A wider badge may need more room than a compact design provides. If two models appeal to you, begin with the one that accommodates the badge and then compare the features you will use.

The leather, thread colour and personalisation come after those decisions. Our wallets are handmade in Canada from full-grain leather, with hand stitching that gives the finished piece its own character.

A simple way to get the order right

Have three details ready: the exact badge version, its attachment type and your preferred wallet layout. Compare the matching printable outline at actual size, then review any difference before placing the order.

If your hat badge is not listed or you cannot identify the version, get in touch with photographs of the front and back. We can explain the next step without asking you to guess at a cutout.

When those details are settled, choose the leather and thread combination you like and create a wallet around the badge you intend to carry.
