What Is Genuine Leather — And Why You Should Avoid It

When shopping for a leather badge wallet, keychain, or belt, it’s easy to get misled by labels. One of the most confusing — and most misused — terms is “Genuine Leather.” It sounds premium. It’s not.
At Hammer & Axe Leather, we believe in transparency. If you're trusting us to make something that represents your service or profession, you deserve the best.
Not All Leather Is Created Equal
Here’s a breakdown of the four main types of leather — from best to worst — and why it matters for products like badge wallets.
🥇 Full Grain Leather – What We Use in Every Wallet

Full grain leather is the highest quality leather available. It comes from the top layer of the hide and retains the full natural grain.
✅ Natural marks and textures — every badge wallet is unique
✅ Ages beautifully — develops a deep, rich patina over time
✅ Incredibly strong and long-lasting
✅ Used by true craftspeople only — hard to work with, but worth it
🔨 At Hammer & Axe Leather, we only use Full Grain Pueblo Vegetable-Tanned Leather from the world-renowned Badalassi Carlo Tannery in Tuscany, Italy. This premium leather features a rustic texture and matte finish that ages beautifully with use.
🥈 Top Grain Leather – Still Good, But Altered
Top grain leather is from the same top layer of the hide but is sanded and buffed to remove imperfections.
➕ Smoother, more uniform look
➕ Easier to produce
➖ Not as strong or durable as full grain
➖ Lacks the unique aging character
Used in many commercial leather goods, but it doesn't tell the story that full grain does.
🥉 Genuine Leather – A Misleading Label
Genuine leather is often made from the leftover layers of the hide after the top has been removed.
➖ Typically coated, painted, or plasticized
➖ Lacks durability and cracks over time
➖ Often used in cheap department store wallets and belts
The term “genuine” might sound like a stamp of authenticity — but it’s actually near the bottom of the leather quality scale.
❌ Bonded Leather – The Bottom of the Barrel
Bonded leather is made from shredded leather scraps glued together with plastic or latex.
🚫 Extremely weak and prone to cracking
🚫 Looks and feels artificial
🚫 Not meant to last — or represent anything meaningful
If you're buying a badge wallet to last, this is what you should avoid at all costs.
